Technical feasibility study was focused on the research of natural additives – particularly animal fat, corn and limestone, which significantly contribute to improving the quality characteristics of wood pellets produced in BIOMASA Association. The research was realised in collaboration with the University of Zilina. The feasibility study searched for the best ways how to promote the use of new renewable energy sources and the most effective fuel increasing energy self-sufficiency of local renewable energy sources.
The main aim of the project:
The aim was the study of natural additives (especially animal fat, corn and limestone) which improve the quality characteristics of wood pellets produced in BIOMASA Association. The results serve for support and use of renewable energy sources and finding the most efficient fuel increasing energy self-sufficiency and utilization of local renewable resources. The results mainly serve for increase the energy value of the wood pellets.
Description of project activities:
1. Phase – preparation of the research
Addressing the subcontractors for the supply of additives – animal fat, corn and limestone needed for production of wood pellets research samples,
It was addressed the following subcontractors: VAS Mojsova Lucka (Public sanitation company), Polnonakup Turiec, DOLKAM Suja.
Production of research samples of wood pellets with various ration of natural additives on pelletise technological line of BIOMASA Association.
2. Phase – realisation of the research
Research of different ratios of natural ingredients (animal fat, corn and limestone) and verification of their properties on the quality of pellets,
Research of energy potential of wood pellets for different ratios of natural ingredients (animal fat, corn and limestone) and the optimum combustion process,
Research of the environmental performance of wood pellets for different ratios of natural ingredients (animal fat, con and limestone) – this research was realised in parallel with research of the optimal combustion process in heat source. It was also monitored the environmental characteristics as the production of CO, NOx, PM, organic carbon, SO, dioxins, etc.
The University of Zilina, Department of energy technology as the partner organisation was participating on the realisation of the 2nd phase of research. It provided the research of energy potential, combustion process and environmental characteristics of wood pellets.
3. Phase – the evaluation of research results
Evaluation of the best ratio of natural additives improving the quality characteristics of wood pellets as heating capacity, abrasion of pellets, the content of pollutants in ash.
